Online Roulette Variations

Roulette is an extremely popular gambling game in which players wager on how a ball will land after it's dropped onto a spinning wheel. The wheel is divided into several slots, each of which is assigned a color and a number. Players may wager on the color of the slot in which the ball will rest, or whether the slot is numbered even or odd.

It's also possible to wager that the ball will fall on an exact number, or one of a few different numbers. Payout ratios at online roulette sites are commensurate with the odds of the bet winning (i.e. a wager on black pays significantly less than a wager on a certain number). There are several roulette variations which change the betting rules, the table layout and payout structures. These include:

  • American Roulette
  • European Roulette
  • French Roulette
  • Mini Roulette
  • Diamond Roulette
  • Roulette Royale
  • Live Dealer Roulette

American Online Roulette Games

American Roulette is the online roulette game variation that will be most familiar to average live casino players. The American Roulette wheel includes 38 slots, numbered 1-36, 0 and 00. The 00 slot is not found in other online roulette games and variations. As in other roulette games, the wagers in American Roulette are largely divided into inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets are those placed on specific numbers or small groups of number. Outside bets are those placed on red, black, even, odd or larger groups of numbers, such as one-third or one-half of the wheel.

European Online Roulette Games

European Roulette is a roulette game variation commonly found online that only includes a 0 slot and not a 00 slot. This reduces the house edge from 5.26% to approximately 2.7%, making European Roulette more favorable for players. Many online gambling sites with European Roulette incorporate the La Partage rule, traditionally only applied to French Roulette.

French Roulette Games Online

French Roulette has two cosmetic differences from other roulette games: the table is displayed in French, and the betting table is colored completely red. This has no effect on gameplay, as the French Roulette wheel still alternates between red and black. French Roulette is similar to European Roulette, in that it only has a 0 slot instead of a 0 and 00 slot, as found in American Roulette.

However, it also has an interesting rule called La Partage, which states that you'll only lose half of your bet when the ball lands on the 0 slot. This only applies to even money bets.

French Roulette also introduced a new group of bets entitled Call bets. Examples of these include Voisins du Zero (a wager on the 17 numbers surrounding the 0 slot), Tiers du Cylindre (a wager on the 12 number on the opposite side of the wheel from the 0 slot) and Finales en Plein (a wager on numbers ending with a certain digit).

Mini Roulette Online

Many online gambling sites now offer Mini Roulette, a simplified version of roulette that offers a smaller betting table and roulette wheel. The roulette wheel in the Mini Roulette game variation includes 13 slots numbered 0 through 12. The betting table is modified to correspond with the smaller amount of numbers. Mini Roulette offers a smaller number of wagering possibilities compared to other online roulette game variations.

Diamond Roulette

Diamond Roulette is a unique and somewhat rare online roulette game variation in which the slots of the wheel are colored red, blue, green, yellow, purple and black instead of the typical two-color scheme. Six numbers are assigned to each color. Players can bet on any of these colors to receive a 5 to 1 payout.

Roulette Royale

Roulette Royale uses the exact same rules as European Roulette, with only a single 0 slot and the familiar payout table in which straight bets pay 35 to 1 and bets such as red, black or odd pay 1 to 1. At online gambling sites, Roulette Royale is only available for real money play because of it's only rule difference from European Roulette: a one-credit side bet is automatically taken each time you place a normal wager, which contributes to a progressive jackpot. You can win the progressive jackpot if the roulette wheel hits the same number on five consecutive spins. Smaller bonuses are awarded for fewer consecutive spins.

Gambling Sites With Live Dealer Online Roulette

Live dealer roulette is a relatively new online roulette game variation offered by cutting edge online gambling sites. Live dealer roulette generally uses the rules of American Roulette, with a massive difference in the way the game is presented. Instead of viewing a virtual roulette wheel during gameplay, you'll view and hear a live video stream of your actual croupier. Bets are still placed through a graphical wagering interface, though the outcome of each game is determined by a real roulette wheel instead of a random number generator.
